[Just Heard] New Song: Metric – “Youth Without Youth”

Metric is back with new single “Youth Without Youth” giving us all a much anticipated taste of their upcoming album Synthetica, due for release on the 12th of June (MMI/Mom & Pop Records).

It’s as confrontational as it aims to be, swathed in the familiar rock and electro sound that the band delivers its messages securely inside. In this case it touches on depraved youth, unrest, unease, and social disruption. They call this particular track an interpretation of “70s sleaze.”

The charged guitar riffs that surround Emily Haines’ baby soft vocals identify that finely balanced tight rope they’ve been known to walk in each of their albums. Music that intrigues and is fun but that ultimately uncoils a dark tale from its underbelly.

I love it, and I love Metric. Their entire body of work can be found sitting patiently in my iTunes collection waiting to be rediscovered. They were one of the first memorable live shows I saw when I first moved to New York. They plan to stop in New York on tour again, at Radio City Music Hall.

The week leading up to yesterday’s release of the new single, they’d been alternately teasing and rewarding their fans with quests and little nuggets of information about “Youth Without Youth” and the making of Synthetica. If you go to their website, you can unlock various stanzas of the sheet music to “Youth Without Youth” and discover things like the dark and weird trailer (below) for the behind the scenes  of the recording of the single.
